The MAU is an inpatient short stay unit that is co-located with the medical ward. The MAU aims to improve the coordination and quality of care for patients, increase efficiency in inpatient management and assist with improving patient flow across the hospital. MAUs provide an alternative to treatment in the Emergency Department (ED) and a pathway from the ED for faster interdisciplinary± assessment and treatment for medical patients who are likely to require a short inpatient admission and/or with chronic conditions and/or complex needs. MAU patients are provided with access to rapid assessment, faster diagnosis and earlier treatment. Once a patient is assessed, their condition diagnosed and treatment provided, the aim is for them to return to home within 48 hours with community services provided as necessary. Patients who require

further inpatient care have an ongoing clinical management plan documented and are transferred to a ward. The MAU doctors work in collaboration with the ED and the inpatient General Medical teams
